Mouse over a photo to pause the Oahu to Kauai, Hawaii slide show.
We say goodbye to big city Waikiki, Oahu and hop an island flight to Kauai. Pick up our car and drive North to Kapaa.
Kapaa, Kauai (pronounced Cap-a-a)
Kapa'a or Kapaa is located mid-island on the east coast about a fifteen minute drive from Lihune Airport. We wanted a central location to explore the entire island and wanted to be in a small town for a bit so we choose some laid-back beachfront accommodations at Kapaa.
Mini-Mall, Restaurants, Organic Food Stores
Just across the street from our place is a little mini-mall. Not exactly what we're looking for but we need supplies and that seems a good starting point to go without having to use the car. Surprise! We find Marco's Mexican Restaurant (big helpings and vegan options with really fresh veggies and hopping hot habenero sauce! Wash that down with a beer and margarita and we're good to keep going). From there we walk over to the bakery (excellent and vegan goodies). The owner of the bakery tells us of a natural and organic store down the road so we zip there to pick up the big stuff - local beer, veggies, snacks, chips, soy milk and lots of fruit for a huge fruit salad that we always have in the fridge. Next morning we check out Tutu's Soup Hale - delicious food and fun people. I have their basil-cashew paté on a sandwich, amazingly good: made fresh each day and a vegan's dream sandwich.
After wrestling with vegan food options in Waikiki, Kauai is looking good!
