Mouse over a photo to pause the Hanalei Bay, Kauai, Hawaii slide show.
We have a great beachfront place in Kapa'a on the East Coast.
Decide to head North to Hanalei Bay: too bad it's cloudy and rainy, but we still have fun.
Surf seemed to be like Tofino surf; beach break and shorter rides. Lots of lessons, groms and paddle boarders.
Hanalei Bay was the home of Andy Irons and you see lots of memorial messages to him around the Hanalei area.
Hanalei Surf Shop
Nice shop full of everything you need for a surf. I buy a wetsuit top that fits like a glove. I still get a chill in these waters and the top is just the ticket to stay warm. The top seems to be a really good price - especially with the Canadian $ so high right now. I also buy a really cute t-shirt that I think was too much money, but it's really cute and I figure I saved on the wetsuit top
so...
Hanalei Shops
Hanalei seems very mch like Tofino with cool little shops, great (and expensive) restaurants and a fun vibe. Everyone is very friendly. The organic market is fabulous and we do a big shop there. I get a smoothie and choose from their salad bar for lunch - delish!
Hanalei Bay Beach
The rain was just on its way when we walked down to Hanalei Beach (Pine Trees, Black Pot) from the shops. We just made out the pier to the covered area and it came pelting down. But it was warm so who cares! The surfers kept surfing and the kids kept jumping off the pier. We watched the surfer for awhile: people taking lessons, groms ripping it up, paddle boarders riding the waves, and other surfers way out catching the bigger waves. Then we headed further up the beach to the river's mouth. There we see the outrigger canoes and also people stand up paddling up the river. That looked like fun and thought we'd give SUP a try it in a few days.
